Everyone knows that avocados are one of those “super foods”. Full of healthy fat, folates, fiber and more – these things pack a nutritional punch. There’s only one problem. How do you get your boys to eat them?
Well, get ready. I’m about to blow your avocado mind.
Chocolate Avocado Pudding
Ingredients:
- One ripe avocado
- 2 TBSP cocoa powder
- 6 or so dates
- dash of vanilla
- water until desired consistency
Add first 4 ingredients to your food processor or blender and turn that puppy on. Drizzle water in until the chocolate mousse is the texture you want.
My favorite thing about chocolate avocado pudding is that it’s a completely raw recipe so it’s crazy nutritious. My second favorite is that my kids are EATING AVOCADOS. And it genuinely tastes like chocolate pudding in flavor and consistency. There is a slight avocado undertone because I’m privy to the ingredients. But honestly if someone just handed it to me and I was avocado ignorant, I might not even notice.
But if for some reason your boys turn their noses up, never fear. Just get back up on the horse. You know, try, try again. Remember, it can take 10 to 15 times of being exposed to a new food before a child (or adult, for that matter) begins to actually like it.
In my experience, as you phase out the unhealthy versions of foods from your home (snack packs, anyone?) and replace them with the good stuff, kids will slowly adapt to a healthier diet – and even like it.
And if all else fails, turn it into a popsicle. Works every time.
I’ve tried this recipe with raisins instead of dates and with no vanilla at all and it always turns out great. I’ve never added sugar (the dates make it sweet) but you could add some stevia or natural sweeteners if you have a particular sweet tooth. Or add more cocoa if it’s not chocolatey enough for your taste.
I tend to at least quadruple the recipe, as it doesn’t make very much. And yes, with the price of avocados and dates, this is a pricey little pudding, so we don’t make it very often. But if your boys will eat it, the benefits far outweigh the cost.
Have you ever tried “Chocomole”?

Great recipe! I make one quite similar, but use a bit of stevia to sweeten it in place of dates and use unsweetened almond milk to thin it. Another variation my boys like is banana-chocolate pudding (throw in a banana and omit any other sweetener) or peanut butter chocolate pudding (just throw in a dollop of peanut butter). My boys went crazy over the homemade “chocolate pudding.” I didn’t let them see me make it until they had it several times and I knew they loved it. They never would have tried it if they know it had avocado in it!
